Advanced SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) for Report Authors

Level: Intermediate-to-advanced
Audience: Report authors and designers, developers, administrators, super-users, etc.
Prerequisites: Completion of our course 'SQL Server Reporting Services' SQSSRS or SQSRS8 or equivalent knowledge, e.g.,
  • Working with Business Intelligence Design Studio and/or Visual Studio
  • Designing data sources
  • Connecting to SQL Server and Analysis Services databases
  • Creating datasets and using Query Builder to design T-SQL queries
  • Adding a group to a table or matrix
  • Creating report/query parameters
Knowledge of SQL on any relational DB platform and some knowledge of OLAP useful.
Summary: Assuming a working knowledge of the above 'Prerequisites', the delegate should be prepared to delve into some of the more esoteric and advanced SSRS features to support a wide variety of reporting scenarios, including:
  • Harnessing the power of OLAP to generate dynamic reports
  • Creating reports that allow users to dynamically group their data
  • Synchronising data visually and within groups
  • Creating user-friendly drill-through reports, calendar reports, forms, labels, etc.
  • Creating ‘Excel-like’ reports that show trend lines or allow for dynamic pivoting
  • Etc.
Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the delegate should be competent to design and implement SSRS 2005, 2008 and 2008 R2 reporting requirements to include but not limited to the following:
  • Aggregate and semi-additive measures
  • Advanced filtering and parameterization
  • Dynamic data sources
  • Grouping/columnar reports
  • Dashboards and KPIs
  • Sparklines, custom charts and gauges
  • Interactive reporting
  • Workarounds for version compatibility
  • Etc.
