CICS Application Programming & Design Workshop

Audience: Aspiring CICS Application Programmers and Designers.
Prerequisites: Completion of our course CICS TS Concepts via Examples or equivalent knowledge.
Summary: Developed and designed for beginners, this course begins by describing CICS as a transaction processor in terms of its architecture, ACID properties, application programming interfaces (APIs), intercommunications facilities, commit protocols, etc. It then uses working examples to develop skills and understanding of the following CICS application development and programming facilities:
  • Screen (user interface) design & BMS
  • Program switching
  • VSAM file inquiry/update
  • VSAM file browsing
  • Storage control (e.g., GETMAIN)
  • Temporary storage
  • Execution Diagnostic Facilities (EDF)
  • Etc.
Objectives: Upon completion of this mainly hands-on course, the participant should be able to develop pseudo-conversational (or conversational) applications while incorporating the CICS facilities shown under 'Core Topics' in the detailed outline. Further, the participant should understand how and why the CICS presentation and business logic should be separate components.
